Who is Angus McLean...
I grew up in the 80’s, so most of my taste – or lack thereof – is from that era. I read
somewhere that the music you were listening to at 14 is what you’ll be listening to at 40. It seems about right to me.
I like to throw some of my favourites into my books, so it’s not unusual for one of my
characters to be rocking along to Springsteen, Journey or Whitesnake. What, you don’t like Whitesnake? Oh well, here I go again on my own…
I was also into muscle cars in a big way, so my room was pretty much adorned with posters of guitar bands, hot rock chicks, and American cars. Firebirds (as below), Mustangs, Camaros, that sorta thing. Probably not so good for the environment with those big block engines, but oh-my-God they were so cool.
Once I was kinda grown up I joined the Police. Why? The great pay and benefits? The night shifts? The working-all-the-time-when-your-mates-are-partying? Nah, pretty much just to catch bad guys.
Sounds corny, I know, but another reason was to make a difference. Has it happened? For sure. I know I’ve made a difference.
My biggest literary influences are classics like Fleming, Connelly, and MacLean. I read constantly and love finding new authors, but I will also happily reread favourites multiple times.
As far as my own writing goes, I like to focus on the character and I love the idea of throwing ordinary people into extraordinary situations and seeing how they react.

I grew up watching the TV private eye and cop shows of the 80's, rocking to the music of the 80's and reading classic crime and action stories-some of these were written in the 80's. Did I mention the 80's rocked?
I write across various genres - crime, action thrillers, espionage and middle grade mysteries. My non-fiction book Cop It Write: The Crime Writer's Handbook is a never-seen-before look behind the scenes of detective and PI work which helps scribes give their writing some authenticity.
I write as much as I can, but not nearly enough; time is never a friend for part-time authors.
